Health & Safety

Concussion safety and Rowan's Law.

The club follows Rowan's Law, Ontario's concussion safety legislation for amateur sport. This page collects the resources every skater, parent, and coach should know.

Rowan’s Law

What Rowan’s Law is.

Rowan’s Law is Ontario’s concussion safety legislation for amateur sport. It is named for Rowan Stringer, an Ontario high-school athlete. Under the law, sport organizations must:

  • Athletes (under 26), the parents of athletes under 18, and coaches, trainers, and officials confirm every year that they have reviewed Ontario's Concussion Awareness Resources.
  • The organization has a Concussion Code of Conduct that participants review each year before taking part.
  • The organization follows Removal-from-Sport and Return-to-Sport protocols whenever a concussion is suspected.

Concussion awareness

Review the Concussion Awareness Resources.

The Government of Ontario publishes free Concussion Awareness Resources for three age groups. Every skater and parent should review the resource for their age group, every year:

  • Ages 10 and under
  • Ages 11 to 14
  • Ages 15 and older

Code of conduct

What a Concussion Code of Conduct covers.

Rowan’s Law requires every sport organization to have a Concussion Code of Conduct that participants review each year. Ontario’s information for sport organizations explains what a Concussion Code of Conduct covers.

If you suspect a concussion

Removal from sport and return to sport.

Under Rowan’s Law, an athlete who has, or is suspected of having, a concussion must be removed from training, practice, or competition right away, and must follow a return-to-sport process before going back on the ice.

If you suspect a concussion at practice or a meet, tell the coach right away and follow up with a medical professional.
